The Top Six Movies In My Film Collection
Until recently I didn’t realise I was such a geek/nerd until my wife made a comment about the amount of DVD’s or Blu-Rays I had in my collection. I used to have a lot more more DVD’s, that was until I left bachelorhood behind and merged both our collections. Just to prove how much of a nerd I am, my subheading for this post is: ‘My Top Five Movies Which Prove You’re Living With a Geek/Nerd’.
Not long after married my sweetheart, I realised her tastes were vastly different from mine. Also, I had too many R/18 rated action movies in my collection. My wife and I decided, that I had to either bin or sell some of my more violent movies. Just so our daughter wouldn’t end up watching something inappropriate for her age, which was a sensible idea. Most of the DVD’s in my wife’s collection were mostly children’s and Disney DVD’s. So you can tell straight away, there was a vast difference in our separate collections.
In the last three years since our marriage, I have steadily rebuilt my collection with different and less violent movies. Instead of 18/R rated movies, I have settled for PG to 15 rated movies. Here are the best top six movies I own.
The Best Top Six Movies In My Movie Collection
1. Star Wars: Complete Saga Blu-Ray Edition
What more can I say about this set? It does cover the new prequels written by George Lucas. I know not many people enjoy The Phantom Menace, but this is one set I do enjoy, even if it does include the much annoying ‘The Phantom Menace’. The set also includes the original trilogy from 1977 to 1983, including the digitally remastered movies. Rather than purchasing the single movies, I am able to watch them all in the proper chronological order. I wonder if they will release a new set when episodes VII, VIII and IX are finally released. I wouldn’t be a true geek if this Blu-Ray set didn’t come first on my list.
2. The Hobbit (All Extended Editions)
I have all three of the Extended Edition Blu-ray collection. The latest installment from Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson. This series is the movie adaptation of The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The first movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released in 2012, where the next installment The Desolation of Smaug, was released the following year in 2013. The final installment and concluding part of the Hobbit, ‘The Battle of the Five Armies’ completes the saga. Overall, this trilogy tries to tell the story of ‘The Hobbit’ from a theatrical viewpoint. I enjoy the book more than the movies, but that doesn’t mean to say these movies destroy the story narrated by Tolkien; however, I do honestly believe that Tolkien would have loved these movies had he been alive today.
3. Lord of the Rings Extended Editions
Although J R.R.Tolkien wrote these last books last, the are the first set of movies which Peter Jackson filmed. These movies are rather long and will you need lots of loo breaks and 18 hours of spare time to watch all of them back to back. The Return of the King is undoubtedly the best out of the whole trilogy, even going on to win 11 Oscars in 2004, including the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director. Although Peter Jackson filmed these first, it is a bit like Star Wars, being film chronologically out of order.
4. Avengers: Age of Ultron
The second in the Avengers story and the prelude to the next installment from Disney/Marvel; Captain America: Civil War. This Avengers story carries on where Captain America: The Winter Soldier finishes. Tony Stark wants to invent something which will benefit the Avengers or take their place. Instead, Tony Stark creates something which he never intended to bad, an AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the form of Ultron. A machine which becomes sentient and hellbent on destroying all life on Earth to start anew; thus creating all new life in Ultron’s image, which sounds familiar from all the other bad guys intent on the destruction of mankind.
5. Guardians of the Galaxy
Part of Disney/Marvel collaboration and linked to the Avengers series. This group of misfits are thrown together in the unlikeliest of situations. In a far of Galaxy where humans and other races mingle, Chris Pratt’s character is scratching a living the best way he can, stealing and pilfering anything which can give him a big pay day. The cast of this movie come together and the movie highly enjoyable with the humour placed and strategic points. Groot (Vin Diesel) whose only words are ‘I am Groot’. Rocket voiced by Bradley Cooper, who stars as a talking Raccoon kidnapped from Earth and genetically modified. is the only person who can understand Groot. Dave Bautista whose muscles say it all, Bautista plays a villain who is meets our motley crew while in prison, who is looking to settle a score with Zoe Saldana character Gamora; the adopted daughter of Thanos. Chaos and mayhem ensue and a chase across the galaxy, where their cargo is just as deadly as the foes who are chasing them. Laying waste to anyone getting in their way. This is one VERY funny movie and I can’t wait for the second installment.
6. Les Misérables (2012)
The movie version of the much beloved theatrical production. Although this it the second time this play has been made into a movie. This version of the movie has more well-known actors and actresses. The cast includes Hugh Jackman (Wolverine. Pan) as the well-known Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, Anne Hathaway as Fontaine, Amanda Seyfried as Cossette, Eddie Redmayne as Marius and Samantha Barks as Éponine. The reason I added this to my top five favorite movies, as this movie gained a lot of praise from media and critics alike. Because of this movie, I still want to see the actual theatrical version. Although this movie does have a 12 certificate, there are songs which even my daughter likes to sing. It is a good round family movie in my opinion.
Not Yet Released, but I want to put on the list can’t yet.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
What more can I say, the seventh installment and now being produced by Disney as Lucas has sold the rights to Disney. Lucas has admitted this was a bad mistake, but now cannot be undone. So far, this movie has lived up to the Star Wars fandom and Universe. I for one was not left disappointed. I loved it and saw it many times at the cinema.
