Devolo dlan 1200 WIFI AC Review
Devolo dLAN 1200 WIFI AC Review
When it comes to watching TV upstairs or just browsing the internet on your iPad or laptop computer, there is nothing more frustrating than watching that circular thingy constantly stopping you from doing the things you love doing. Whats more, there is away around this. As our internet speeds are getting faster, so has the need for using all of our mobile devices, especially in area’s of the home which can be sometimes inaccessible to your WIFI-Internet connection. This can be so so annoying. Well what if I told you there was a way of eliminating those WIFI Dead spots around your home. A dead spot in terms of internet, is a place where you cannot pick up a internet signal.
My wife and I had been discussing something similar which we had with a previous ISP, where we had been given some Power-line adaptors which were part of an overall package. These adapters were designed to pick up the signal of pur Internet WIFI router and send it all over the house. As we are now with a totally different ISP, getting Power-line adapters are not as straight forward, as some of Power-Line adapters have to be compatible with your ISP’s router or service. Finding out which adapters can then be connected is not always broadcast by your ISP, probably for their own self interests. That was until we came across these adapters called the: Devolo dlan 1200+ WIFI ac Starter Kit Powerline.
How Power-Line Adapters Work
Power-Line adapters use your existing electrical power socket to boost and carry your router signal around the home. With the Devolo dLan Starter Kit, these boost your WIFI signal.
The tricky part which I found out later on, is knowing how to connect all of these devices to your existing WIFI connection, without the need for changing your WIFI access name and passwords etc. This is where the Starter kit comes in and does all this for you, with a little help of a mobile app and or a web browser.
A major issue we have in our current home, is the fact that there is no plug socket near the telephone socket. Which makes it very interesting when it comes to plugging in the router. So we have a 6 socket extension cord from the nearest wall socket, close to where the phone line is connected. Problematic…. Just a tad.
Connecting up The Adapters
The first adapter with no buttons on the front, has be connected to your internet router via the network cable supplied with the starter kit. There is a small button on the side and this encrypts the data between adapter and your router. Once the LED goes white. Hey presto, the first adapter is now ready. Download the Devolo cockpit app from the Apple store or Google Play store to access adapter(s). You will need to write down any WIFI security keys on the back of the devices.
The next adapter which actually extends your WIFI signal needs to be then plugged in within 10 metres of the first adapter. Now you have two ways of configuring this. First you can use the buttons on the device or, you can use computer or mobile app. If you connect through the adapters, you will need to press the HOME button (encryption button) to start the synchronisation sequence. Again, once all the LED’s turn white, the synchronisation process has been completed. There is a simple manual for you to follow if you get stuck.
Once the second adapter is synchronised with your router, your WIFI is now extended. You can then move this adapter ANYWHERE you wish within the home. It even has two Gigabit LAN ports on the top so you can connect a static computer if you so wish.
Now, there can be a situation where you may pickup two separate WIFI signals. Through either the app, web browser or the adapters themselves, you can copy the WIFI signal straight from the router. This is known as cloning. As mentioned before, you can now move your WIFI adapter to another room to boost your main WIFI signal throughout your home. This is a great way of maintaining a strong and reliable WIFI signal throughout your home.
So, I have installed the main two adapters. Now I need to add the second adapter somewhere upstairs. Preferably in our bedroom, as my wife likes to blog and do her social media from the bedroom, from time to time. I also like to watch movies on my iPad and find it a little frustrating when the WIFI signal is incredibly weak and cuts out at critical moments.
The Add-on adapter needs to be close to the router to be configured and once all of the LED’s have gone white and stopped flashing, hey presto, you are done. Again, you can either use the mobile app, or your web browser to add this device to your currently configured network of adapters.
On the back of each adapter is a security ID tag in series of letters. The letters are case sensitive and have to be entered as you see them on the back of the device. Once you have copied these numbers in to the text area’s as shown above, plug the device in to a plug socket and wait 2 minutes and then press ‘Start setup’. It will then take about 5 minutes until the last adapter is configured just as the first two.
Later I went back to my web browser to see if all the devices were running as they should be. To see data going through the main adapters, meant everything was running as smoothly as I wanted them to be. This is always a good sign.
After a few attempts to make sure I had everything set up correctly. It didn’t take long too see the benefits. Hurrah, I wasn’t getting any WIFI dropouts like was before I installed them. WOOOOT. Finally, we can all get a stable WIFI connection, no matter where we are around our home.
I am glad I have something which does everything it says on the box, and there are not many times I can say that. This is a great little piece of kit, the only real down side is the price; £159.99 just for the starter kit. It is an extra £109.99 for the add-on adapter. They are NOT cheap, but what you get for your money is a LOT and for our family these devices are well worth it. Don’t just take my words for it, you need to try them for yourselves. The benefits out-weigh the costs.
